Since no ships would dare cross the freezing waters until the thaw, Eva's fishing boat's crew has no way of returning. Unfortunately, they have had to eat their bait because the fishing has been so bad. Although the enterprise is officially owned by the widowed Eva, Ragnar, her hefty but somewhat older second husband, serves as the taskmaster, foreman, and skipper. When a ship strangely crashes on the reefs in their bay, Eva, who generally yields to him, does so once more even though she has the last word. He maintains that they cannot afford to save additional hungry mouths because they cannot even feed themselves.
Naturally, this results in some negative karma, particularly when Eva and Ragnar plan a salvage operation to find supplies. The fact that they have to beat off survivors makes things fairly unpleasant. Naturally, eerie old Helga is aware that all of this creates an atmosphere that is favorable for vindictive drugs. As expected, something seems to soon begin preying on the fishing camp, causing them to go insane or die off one by one. To no avail, Helga uses traditional charms to try to safeguard them.
