Richard and his wife Susan along with their kids, Sam and Jessie are traveling to the Swedish island of Svalta. Richard's plans for a fun vacation are interrupted by the harsh and restless children, but as they reach their destination, they start to notice something strange about the place. In preparation for the highlights of the Karantan Celebration, where the locals perform a spectacle describing their terrible escape from English rule, they have rented a house from Matts. Susan wants to pay tribute to one of her relatives who passed away in Svalta, but the inhabitants aren't friendly.
